When it comes to dieting and exercise, there is a lot of talk of ‘willpower’. This can backfire and make a person feel bad about them. For example, a person that has tried to unsuccessfully lose weight over and over again will end up feeling they have no willpower or are lazy. With a bit of careful thought, one can see why such an assumption is irrational. How can a person that has tried dieting over and over again be lazy? Most nonsurgical weight loss programs are based on a combination of diet, behavior modification and regular exercise. Unfortunately, even the most effective interventions don't work for everyone. It's estimated that less than 5 percent of individuals who participate in nonsurgical weight loss programs will lose a significant amount of weight and maintain that loss for an extended period of time.

Patients who come to the weight loss program at Portsmouth are tested for a range of health concerns—liver and kidney function, diabetes, stomach ulcers, gallbladder problems, hypertension and other issues. Beyond this, they receive psychological assessments and are educated about behavior modification, physical therapy and nutrition. You will not necessarily burn more fat using a ‘fat burn’ program on the treadmill which keeps you in an intensity of 50 – 60% of your max heart rate. There is evidence to show that exercising at a light to moderate range burns more fat than strenuous exercise as the body has greater access to use fat as a fuel during these lower intensities. As you can see in the table below, a percentage of fat is used during all intensities of exercise, but at different rates. Because the rate of fat use is slow during light to moderate exercise, it is important to increase the duration of your exercise session – minimum of 30 minutes progressing to 60 minutes.
