Patients who come to the weight loss program at Portsmouth are tested for a range of health concerns—liver and kidney function, diabetes, stomach ulcers, gallbladder problems, hypertension and other issues. Beyond this, they receive psychological assessments and are educated about behavior modification, physical therapy and nutrition. Patients proceeding with the program are required to lose a percent of their body weight through diet and exercise.
How much weight will I lose? : it really does depend on how much weight you have to lose in the first place and how well you stick with the programme.  I have seen 3-4 kg lost in the first two phases (2 weeks and 2 days) through to a staggering 10kg.  For most people the first two phases sees the most dramatic loss in weight after which point is does slow down a bit.  One lady on the plan at the moment has lost 7kg and she is a couple of weeks into phase 3 (more relaxed phase where one weekly treat meal is allowed) and is half way to her total weight loss goal.
Bariatric weight loss surgeries, such as gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy or laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB), force patients to drastically reduce the amount of food they consume by surgically creating a small stomach pouch. Most gastric procedures reduce the stomach's holding capacity from about two quarts to two ounces. When eating, this pouch fills quickly. Because patients feel satisfied and full sooner, they eat less.
Phase 2: Get in the zone: lasts for 14 days and is the strictest part of the programme.  Some people can get detox and withdrawal symptoms (headaches, cravings, etc).  I have other people who can feel hungry while they go through this adjustment phase.  It is best to avoid exercise during this phase.  At the end of this phase energy is increased and the weight loss results are usually very motivating.
There are many variables and factors in the complex world of health insurance. Most providers have so many different plans that we cannot give general advice to our patients. We will provide you with a “super bill” for your insurance company. This is signed by our physician with proper coding and any other requirements. You can then submit the bill to your Insurance Carrier for reimbursement. Although we do not see any monies ourselves, we do know that over 50% of our patients do get reimbursed for medical fees.

Weight-loss programs typically have a monthly fee and may charge for packaged food or drink supplements, from $18 a month for the least expensive online plan, to more than $700 monthly. Food delivery programs featuring fresh food cost more. The cost of medically supervised weight-loss programs varies upon the services offered. Health insurance companies may cover some or all of your costs if you have weight-related health conditions such as heart disease, hypertension or diabetes.
"I have spent much of my life on one diet or another and this is the first programme that has really made a long term difference.  I have stopped yo-yo-ing up and down and I have finally managed to stabilise. My weight is pretty much at the same level that it was at the end of my plan and that was nearly two years ago - that's what I call a result!"
Prior to your first appointment with the doctor, we will first need to establish your BMI ( body mass Index) as you need to have a BMI in excess of 30 (27 with associated comorbidities), not be taking any medication for conditions such as epilepsy or depression, and provide confirmation that you are over the age of 18 (ID required) before any appointment can be offered.

Some patients have a need for other consultations (for example, with a consultant psychiatrist/ full course of psychological therapy, or a sleep apnoea consultant), or may require blood tests, electrocardiograms, echocardiograms, or overnight sleep oximetry; these would all be separately charged. If a patient requires more frequent support or help – including additional consultations or weekly support, these will be charged in separately.

Bariatric surgery is the general term for a variety of weight loss surgical procedures that reduce the size of the stomach, helping patients to lose weight and maintain health through reduced consumption, healthy eating and exercise. The surgery is a tool, not a cure, to help treat weight problems. Our mission is to help patients transform their lives through surgical weight loss when nonsurgical attempts have been unsuccessful.
The free information sessions throughout the year offer education about obesity and its related health risks, detailed information about weight loss surgery options, an opportunity to meet our surgeons and members of the bariatric team and talk with an insurance specialist. Former patients are often on hand to describe their experiences. These sessions are mandatory for anyone considering weight loss surgery. Family members and friends are welcome to attend.
Most nonsurgical weight loss programs are based on a combination of diet, behavior modification and regular exercise. Unfortunately, even the most effective interventions don't work for everyone. It's estimated that less than 5 percent of individuals who participate in nonsurgical weight loss programs will lose a significant amount of weight and maintain that loss for an extended period of time.

Our free monthly support groups provide opportunities before and after surgery to learn and ask questions of our dietitian, psychologist and bariatric nurse, as well as patients who share their personal stories about the challenges and successes of weight loss surgery. Support groups are open to anyone who has had or is planning to have weight loss surgery.

(Please note: Both the Fat Burn and the Cardio Program on the treadmill use an age related calculation to determine your training heart rate intensity. We do not recommend you to use these programs. This range is generally not an appropriate range for cardiac patients as most are on a beta-blocker which lowers heart rate. Please follow your heart rate guidelines (Training Heart Rate) prescribed for you by your kinesiologists as this is a more accurate range for you.)
The price of your post-weight loss contouring procedure varies depending on the extent of treatment needed as well as other possible factors. After you meet with Dr. Nimtz, we will identify exactly what your procedure will cost, at which time we will give you an all-inclusive quote. We do offer CareCredit® as a financing option, and our office also accepts Visa, Master Card, American Express, and Discover as well as cash or personal checks.
Bariatric surgery is saving lives and benefiting people struggling with morbid obesity worldwide. With each successful procedure, the medical community sees further evidence that bariatric surgery is an effective weight loss tool and treatment for obesity-related health conditions. Many studies show that bariatric surgery patients are living longer, higher-quality lives.
“The best part about this programme was the motivational side – I didn’t know it was coming and it was just what I needed. Kyle made me feel comfortable and at ease and his style was clear and direct. Working through the programme ended my fear of being stuck in rut indefinitely and I am more committed to making changes, feel better about myself and am confident that I can achieve my weight loss goals.” (Smita Patel, London) more…
